Padraig Harrington Wins Open....AGAIN!
20 July 2008

Today, Padraig Harrington won the Open at the Royal Birkdale in Southport. Harrington became the first European in more than a century to win golf’s oldest championship two years in a row.

It hasn’t been an easy week for the modest Rathfarnham man. 8 days back, it appeared that Padraig would not be able to defend his title after news broke about his wrist injury.

But Harrington proved the skeptics wrong in an amazing performance this evening. Despite strong winds, the 36-year-old produced breathtaking birdies at 13 and 15 and an excellent eagle on the 17th.

Padraig grew up on Ballyroan Road in the leafy suburb of Rathfarnham. His late father Patrick helped to set up the successful Stackstown Golf Club and encouraged his son to son to take up the sport. While attending Colaiste Eanna Boys Secondary School in Ballyroan, Padraig was trained and coached by the vice principal, Sean O'Donnell.
